She has started painting ever since her childhood. In 1958, she entered the Beijing Arts and Crafts School . Upon graduation, she was assigned as a commercial artist in the Beijing Decoration & Design Office. In 1978, She was transferred to the Beijing Academy of Chinese Painting to work as a full-time professional artist.
In the 1960s, Wu Xi learned painting from the famous Chinese artist Ye Qian Yu, which helped her lay a solid foundation in realistic painting. In the 1970s she learned painting skill from the great master Li Ku Chan and, in the 1980s, she became a student of the well known artist Cui Zi Fan.
Wu Xi excels in flower-and-bird paintings. Her works show solid foundation in classic Chinese painting as well as her unique style that is powerful and flowing representing nature with clean-cut lines, simple compositions and bold ink wash.
Many of her paintings have been exhibited both in China and abroad. In 1989, her painting The Dim Light Of The Nightwas exhibited in the Monte Carlo International Exhibition of Modern Art. Her name is listed in the Chinese Painters, Calligraphers and Engravers and, the Dictionary of Modern Chinese Painters published in Japan.
