Snow Moon Night by Yu Zhi Xue

Artist : Yu Zhi Xue 于 志 学               Dimension : 67x118cm
This painting was done on rice paper. It has been flat-mounted and ready for framing.

Artist Yu Zhixue was born in Heilongjiang Province, China in 1935. Founder of a new school of Chinese painting specializing in ice/snowscapes-"The Art of painting White".

Upon Yu's graduation from Zhaodong High in 1955, he went to Harbin and studied at the Chunhua Art Scholl. In 1959, he was appointed as art teacher Harbin Eastern Art Scholl. In 1960, he was appointed as Editor of the Heilongjiang Illustrated Magazine and in 1962, as Art Editor of the Paople's Publication. In 1980, he was transferred to Heilongjiang Provincial Painting and Calligraphy Academy as Chief of the Creative Research Office. He is currently Dean of the Academy, Professor and First Class Artist.

His creation of the new-traditional style of ice/snowscape painting in the 80's has brought him immense recognition abroad and at home. He was appointed as Chairman of the Heilongjiang National Painting Association; Vice Chairman of Heilongjiang Artist Association; and Chairman of the Ice and Snowscapes Art Academy. He was awarded as Vice Director of the Biography Association by the America International Biography Research Institute; and member of the Cambridge International Biography Center in England.

Since 1980, his works have been displayed in numerous international exhibitions in more than 20 countries, including America, Germany, France, Japan and Hong Kong.

His name was listed on the "Directory of World Distinguished Persons", published by International Publishing Center, London, 1983 Edition. Subsequently, his name appeared on more than 10 worldwide authoritative personage directories, such as the "World Famous 500 Persons", "International Personage Directory" and "Distinguished 5,000 Persons" etc.

He was awarded Medal of Honour for Life, Golden Key of Success from International Biography Institute of America etc.

Yu's success story did not come easy. Unsatisfied by the conventional ways of painting ice/snowscapes by Chinese artist-note: the techniques of leaving blank or splashing white pigments on coloured backgrounds are too restrictive and inadequate in capturing the splendor of a northern snow scene. In 1960, Yu began his search for a more direct way of expressing the extreme coldness of the northern region. After 2 decades of persistent experimentation and ignoring harsh criticisms from his orthodox peers. In 1980, Yu finally came out with a revolutionary breakthrough that shocked the Chinese art world – "The Art of Painting White" versus the traditional "Art of Painting Black", the latter, which uses ink as major and space as ancillary, has prevailed in over 2000 years of Chinese art history. Yu has created an art form that uses white as major and black as ancillary whilst keeping the traditional brush strokes as a basis.

As such, Yu Zhixue is not just another famous artist, he is a founder of a new school and his name will always be remembered in the history of Chinese art development.
